Women of the World

7 November 2007 – Tour – The Netherlands

Women of the World, a dance production by choreographers Yanjinzi Gao (China) and Anouk van Dijk (the Netherlands)

From different cultures, female choreographers Gao Yanjinzi (China) and Anouk van Dijk (the Netherlands) created Women of the World, a contemporary dance performance that embodies the dialogue between eastern and western culture. Women of the World is produced by China’s most renowned modern dance company, the Beijing Modern Dance Company.

The work of Chinese choreographer Yanjinzi Gao finds it’s artistic source in her Buddhist upbringing and traditional Chinese dance. In a contemplative, harmonious world her dancers move with a natural flow of energy, causing the audience to question the meaning of such labels as ‘traditional’, ‘modern’, ‘east’ and ‘west’.

Dutch choreographer Anouk van Dijk’s style is of a very personal nature. Her choreographic work intriguingly combines virtuoso dance with a strong theatrical concept. With tangible characters in an abstract setting, she creates powerful worlds in which everyday realities run smoothly into absurd fantasies.
