Dutch monumental ceramics in China

29 May 2008 – Fuping (Shaanxi province) – China

Eight Dutch artists realised monumental ceramic sculptures for a permanent exhibition in Fuping

In 2006, Promotie Monumentale Keramiek (PMK) was requested to join in a elaborate international project of the FuLe International Ceramic Art Museums (FLICAM) in Fuping (Shaanxi province). In 2008, eight Dutch artists produced a number of ceramic works during a four-week stay in Fuping. For the participating artists, working in a land with an enormous tradition in manufacturing ceramics and which is currently in a pivotal period, turned out to be an extraordinary enriching experience.

FuLe International Ceramic Art Museums (FLICAM)

The FuLe International Ceramic Art Museums project now includes eight pavilions containing presentations from several (western world) countries. With this project, FLICAM is well on its way to becoming one of the most important ceramics centres in China. The invitation for the Dutch artists to participate is highly valued; the permanent presentation offers a perfect place for promotion of Dutch artists working in (monumental) ceramics.

Participating artists

Six of the participating artists produce figurative work: Hans van Bentem, Ingrid Mol, Pepijn van Nieuwendijk, Tejo Philips, Adriaan Rees and Nick Renshaw represent this group. The two other artists (Rem Posthuma and Anton Reijnders) work in an abstract style, inspired by nature, architecture and philosophy.

The work

In their work for FLICAM, the artists have integrated their impressions of prior visits to Beijing and Xi’an (The Terracotta Army and the Shaanxi History Museum), as well as daily life in and around the FLICAM premises. The exhibition hall itself also influenced the artists in making the works. Either directly on the floor, wall or ceiling, the works interact directly with their spatial setting, adding to the dialogue between the artworks themselves.
