Chinese avant-garde art

Today, contemporary Chinese art is enjoying popularity. Record-breaking prices are paid at art auctions. With the exhibition China Now, The Cobra Museum of Modern Art explored this phenomenon further and revealed the artist of the Chinese avant garde and the developments that preceded their work. Chinese contemporary artists find themselves in a period of transition and transformation. They are grappling with issues such as what attitude to adopt both towards traditional Chinese art and the rapidly-changing society in which they live. Powerful works of art are born out of their dilemmas - work reminiscent of the energetic social involvement of the European CoBrA artists.

With China Now, the Cobra Museum for Modern Art presented art of a wide variety of artistic work, ranging from paintings and images to installations, photographs and new media. Almost all eminent artists of today’s China are represented with one or more works. Famous artists such as Fang Lijun, Yue Minjun and Zhang Xiaogang were represented, but the exhibitions also featured new stars like strong>Liu Jianhua and Yin Xiuzhen.
